Francis Ceramics hand-painted tiles

For the refurbishment of the Chinawhite Night Club in London, we were asked to create a tiling scheme for the vanity unit in the VIP restrooms.
The architects explained that they needed a Chinese landscape feel to the installation and supplied a small landscape, shown right, to give an idea of what they had in mind.
Carol Francis researched traditional Chinese landscape painting to ensure that the project captured the spirit of this ancient art. The finished design is in cobalt blue oxide on a cream glaze. The final result makes an impressive and unusual statement.

Several preparation drawings were made to ensure that the main details were not obscured by the placement of the wash basins. The clients approved the design as it evolved, and the final painting captures the client's requirements of tumbling water, distant hills and misty valleys in the Chinese style.
